Giant versus average open player

For non perfect players, I think three things need to be looked at: their average skill, their skill in the particular match, and luck (in the particular match, as commonly defined). Then I am not sure how to classify the difference between average skill and actual skill in a given match. For example, if I play someone who usually plays a 5 PR, and now plays a 6, is that my luck? Or my skill in creating problems for him/her?
Probably someone could make a nice model with the frequency of mistakes as one input, and the size of mistakes (some distribution) as another, which could be used to figure out the importance of the different factors in explaining a given result.
