Oops, I almost didn't scroll down far enough to see your reply post.
GnuBG makes a lot of errors in the opening. I'm rehashing the one above for anyone that might not know. Data for White's second move of the sequence (43Z-43, diagrammed above) is
43Z-43
Snowie .. [H=X K28] 12*5
GnuBG .. [H X9 K35] 15*5...where H = Hit (13/10 8/4), X = hit-and-split (24/21 8/4*) and K = Kill (8/4*/1*). Hitting twice is a common mistake by beginners and some intermediates.
White was GNU 2-ply! What should she have played with the 21?
When hitting on the 5pt in the early game, it is almost always better to come down with the 2 rather than split. I have to confess I was just making a guess based on that, though this might be an exception (rollout would be needed).
The position in question, with White having rolled 21, is shown below on the left.
On the right is the same situation arrived at by a different sequence where White did not err on the second roll (she double-hit with 41 instead of 43) and now she has a 32 to play. The after-positions of hit-and-down and hit-and-split are the same. The only difference worth mentioning is that White has a plausible third choice of not hitting with 6/1.
Nack
