I know nothing about football but would also expect this decision in the specifically described situation to be close esp. if as you mention the team on drive has a terrible offense or the team on drive has a stellar defense. In that case with so little time left in the game and only needing to get ahead and not get ahead by X amount of points, I'd take the 3. I would need all the specifics to make my call as Stanley didn't have them but I'm not looking them up.
