I suppose as far as lack of range is concerned, it is like a bot's inability to sense when an opponent is going to drop a ND/T. The official call is "no error".
While I will agree with the range assessment as far as reaction and quickness, I think Jeter somewhat makes up for it with a great sense of where to be and what to do in any situation. No other shortstop ever makes the cutoff in first base foul territory and flips behind to get the runner at the plate. Still the greatest defensive play I've ever seen.
Jeter's value as a player goes well beyond his raw stats. He is a leader and makes his entire team perform better. And he is clutch, managing to produce when it most matters. Finally, while I deplore this current act of blatant acting to steal first base, Derek Jeter has done as much as anyone to create a positive impression of the game of baseball with the public and especially with youth.
