Pete Rose is banned entirely from baseball for betting on the Reds while managing the Reds -- the Reds had to get a special waiver for him to walk onto the field last weekend in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of breaking Ty Cobb's hit record.
Egregious? yes. But there are some other most questionable characters in the HOF. You can start w/ Dave Winfield in my opinion, his career should have been spent in prison for attempted murder.
I doubt anyone will ever approach Rose's hit record. Had Ichiro Suzuki played the early portion of his career in MLB he perhaps would have had a chance -- this is his 10th season and I think will be his 10th year w/ over 200 hits. But he is in his late 30's now.
But hard to imagine anyone having the skill, longevity, opportunity, drive, etc. that Rose had.
Pete Rose was not the world's greatest athlete by a long shot -- probably not even a mediocre athlete. But no one played harder, was more driven to succeed, and accomplished more with what skill they possessed than Rose.
I think it a travesty that he's not in the Hall of Fame.
I haven't been to the HOF in 15 years or so and at that time I was not struck by gross commercialism -- perhaps it has changed. Thankfully, I was also not bombarded by pictures of the non-member Derek Jeter either.
