Into his 40s? Don't know, that's pushing it ... still doesn't make this statement in response to his all star appearances at 5 different positions any better. And the reason is that as he aged he had to play less demanding defensive positions

He played 2B until '67 where he switched to LF and continued to switch between there and RF until the Big Red Machine of 1975 where he played 3B. He continued to play 3B through '78 for the Reds and when he went to the Phillies in '79 he started playing first.

I don't why he switched from 2B to OF, possibly to make room for Tommy Helms and then remained there when Helms left because we got Joe Morgan to play second? I know why he switched from 3B to 1B though, he was traded to the Phillies and they already had this guy there named Mike Schmidt, not too shabby.

He was born in '41 and played 3B which is on par with 2B as far as a 'demanding defensive position' through '78. That means he at least made it to 37 years old playing your demanding positions and would have stayed there longer if he wasn't traded to the Phillies and needed to change positions.
