Rose was the versatile, team-player, all-star. He played, very capably, wherever it was best for the team for him to play. And, to a degree, to use his more valuable hitting talents for a longer period of time. Very common for middle infielders to change to less-demanding positions later in their careers. Think Banks, Carew, Ripkin, Molitor, and Yount for starters.
Same was true of Biggio -- he came up as a catcher but the Astros thought his career could be prolonged by getting him out from behind the plate (very tough on the knees). So, he became a second baseman. Then later on, I believe when they signed Jeff Kent, the versatile Biggio moved to centerfield to allow Kent to play second.
Rose and Biggio are the classic examples of versatile, team-oriented players.
