Each player is judged for the HoF voting with consideration to the position he plays. The more important defensive skill is to a position, the less the offensive output expected of players at that position. Shortstop and catcher are the most important defensive positions. It is much more valuable to have a shorstop with the offensive skills of Jeter than a first-baseman. If Jeter were a first-baseman, he would would not be in consideration for a first-ballot HoF'er. Because defense is so important at shortstop and I believe Jeter to be a poor defensive shortstop, I think his HoF credentials lose a little luster, but he is still a lock and very likely first-ballot selection for all of his other attributes.
