'He was born in '41 and played 3B which is on par with 2B as far as a 'demanding defensive position' through '78.'
3b is not quite as demanding a defensive position a 2b. I would rate the importance of overall defense, including throwing arm, in this order: ss, c, cf, 2b and rf a near tie, 3b, lf and 1b a near tie.
Also, Rose was a mediocre fielder at most of the positions he played, other than 1b. But most of his positions, other than 2b and RF, did not require more than mediocrity.
Often the poorest fielders on a team play fist base and left filed, with third base next. These were three of Rose's five all-star positions.
