I recall similar factors being discussed last year for the infamous Belichick decision.

The error in reasoning seems to be that most people assume if you give the other team a short field then you're doomed, but if you pin them back inside the 20 it's virtually impossible for them to do anything. In reality, 25 extra yards of field position is worth something but not nearly as much as the conventional wisdom assumes.

Your question regarding big cubes is a good one. A lot of good players give up gobs of equity because they "don't want to put the match on the line" against a weaker opponent. If you give up enough equity then you're not going to be the better player any more.
