Rackers ill, not injured

No, I was not watching the game, but it was on in the background and I heard mention of Rackers being placed on the injury list on Friday. As it turns out, he was ill and listed as probable. If he did not have a muscular or a ligament injury, the decision to go for a field goal should have been automatic. He expressed disappointment in not being called on and Kubiak said something about the wind being against him and wanting to 'trust' the defense. I agree it was a huge blunder to punt but here are thoughts that may have influenced the coach:
1) His range. Before every NFL game the special team coach will watch his team’s kicker attempt kicks from long-range to get an idea of the kicker's range in each direction. We aren’t aware of Racker’s pregame range, but Kubiak may have been told that Rackers was unable to make field goals from 50+ yards out in that direction.;
2) It was 70 degrees and 25% humidity with a breeze that was effecting the kickoffs significantly. Cooler, thinner air causes the ball to carry less than more humid air. Rackers had already missed a 47 yard field goal going against the breeze.
3) It was natural grass. Long field goals are harder on natural grass.
