There are two reasons we do multiple choice:

1) it saves time...in a live quiz, with a room full of people, we only give about a minute to make each answer. We need to do this because in addition to giving the quiz, we talk about the positions and why the best plays are best, so it is not only a quiz for the participants, but a learning experience. In Florida, where we gave this quiz, both Perry and John O'Hagan were there to explain the plays and answer questions;

2) there were many beginner and intermediate players in the room, and the quiz would simply be far too difficult for them without multiple-choice.

Your point is excellent however, as there are truly some very reasonable plays that are not in the top three choices for each play.
