It makes sense not to cross bridges before you get to them. However, that's not the point here. The point is that since there are 4 bad rolls, one needs to assess how many routes to a gammon there are to counterbalance that. (If there were no bad rolls then such an assessment would not be necessary.) The pointing rolls might not be enough, so then one needs to think about whether the non-pointing rolls also supply potential routes to a gammon. If they're just cashes then they don't help counterbalance the 4 bad rolls.
