The reason poker spiked after 2003 without reading everything you wrote is because Chris Moneymaker, a nobody who qualified for the WSOP via a $40 satellite, won the damn thing. His name and the prize pool going to Joe Nobody who has proven he couldn't hold a candle to the pros really pushed poker. It also pushed many more satellites for average Joe's to win their entry into the main event.
