Bots killed the game? WHAT?!

Are you kidding? I would have very little interest in backgammon if it wasn't for the bots. I love the analysis of my play, study of referrence positions, and discussions online about difficult decisions which are later evaluated by rollout. The constant drive to improve my Snowie rating and now my eXtreme performance rating motivates me to play backgammon. I sure do not play it for the money. I never play free backgammon. But there is not enough action to win real money online. I do OK. Enough to take the family out to an upscale restaurant from time to time.
Jellyfish came out well before the decline in backgammon tournament attendance. I recall that Kit mentioned at GammonOnline that he noticed an immediate improvement in general backgammon tournament play after Jellyfish.
I have frequently considered the state of backgammon during the 70's before bots. I know that this was the height of its popularity. However, I have heard long time backgammon tournament players indicate that tourney popularity declined because of slow play, less high profile celebrities, or other reasons. Tourney declined due to bots is a new concept to me.
Well, I would like to hear other's opinion?
Would you play as much backgammon if it was not for bots? (I Certainly Would Not!)
Have bots hurt live tournaments?
Are bots mostly helpful or harmful to backgammon popularity?
