Responding to Redshirt Racquetball Rich
Posted By: Paul Weaver In Response To: Bill Davis' Clocks Policy, March 2011 CSI Event (Rich Munitz)
Date: Saturday, 2 October 2010, at 12:57 a.m.
Racquetball Rich, who wore a solid red shirt this year in Chicago, wrote, "Maybe Bill wrote that just to annoy you Paul. I'll wait until I see it in print - and hope that by that time it says something else and you look silly."
I have forwarded Bill's Sep 7 e-mail to you.
Incidentally, if Bill wanted to annoy me, he could do so by executing the following series of events:
(1) After posting the draw Saturday at noon, Bill inconceivably and inexplicably does absolutely nothing during the first round to make sure all matches are progressing at a reasonable pace. Consequently, some matches take hours longer than they should and the tournament is doomed to failure before Bill takes any corrective action.
This is not a "mistake." A mistake is when the director misspells a name on the scoresheet. (1) above is a major colossal screw up and not a "mistake," especially when the same thing happens year after year.
(2) Bill has no matches for me to play between 8:15 and 11:15 PM.
(3) Bill wants me to play until 2:15 AM, long after he and Amy have gone to bed.
(4) Bill requires me to play my money round match at 10 AM.
(5) Bill sees absolutely nothing wrong with the way he has run his tournament and offers no apology.
I am not sure, but I think if Bill wanted to annoy me, he could probably do so by executing the above five sequence of events.
Any director who does not use clocks has a very difficult job for himself if he has any intention of running his tournament on a reasonable schedule. The TD must spend a lot of time monitoring the matches.
He should walk around the entire playing room at least once every thirty minutes to see which matches are behind schedule.
How can a director look at the score sheet and know if a match is behind schedule? This is possible only if the TD knows when the match began.
All TDs should print up score sheets with a big box at the top that says "Match Start Time." Contestants should be required to fill in the box with the time the match begins.
