John probably made the anchor. The rollout will probably show the plays are close. Anchoring is probably less likely to lead to having to face a gammonish 4-cube -- or any 4-cube. If the 8 point blot is hit, it's not a tragedy -- John might play a bar point game with one checker behind. If it's missed Opp has 4 checkers to bring home (midpoint and straggler) before he can think of cubing. 9/3* 8/3 is a lot more gammonish for both sides. If Opp is only an average player, he needs a gammon win a lot more than John does.
