If Opp is only an average player, he needs a gammon win a lot more than John does.

Agreed. It's illuminating to fool around with the Jacobs-Trice METs, calculating gammon prices for each side at various scores and cube levels. At most scores, the stronger player's gammon wins are less valuable than in the equal-skill case, and the weaker player's more.
