Point taken but the bottom line is not true, he will not 'get back what was lost by playing out the race'.

Bob points out that he is not just talking about a competition which compares your ER to your opponent, but also systems that involve ranking players according to ER, etc. For example, let's say I aspire to be ranked as the lowest ranked ER player on Gridgammon. Over the long haul, I am probably better off taking long race cubes that are close passes, as opposed to passing and setting the checkers up for a new, possibly complicated game.

I will get dinged slightly for the initial take, but then I get to play 15-20 rolls flawlessly (because the plays are so easy), and all the decisions are weighted the same. My opponent gets the same opportunity to make 15-20 easy plays, of course, but it doesn't help him in the big picture because he is not pursuing a conscious strategy of exploiting these positions.
