Over the long haul, I am probably better off taking long race cubes that are close passes, as opposed to passing and setting the checkers up for a new, possibly complicated game.

I take it you have never actually tried this. First off, it assumes both perfect checker and cube play on your part. Then remember the bot will not count decisions in which there is no equity at stake. (I'm assuming XG as the bot since we are in a modern bg world)

All that aside, the important thing is set up a race that's a close pass and play it out perfectly for X rolls. Your ER starting the position is 0 (before taking the pass), even if the pass is only ~.02 over the line, you will end up playing ~1.5. So you have to find the smallest passes available and know that they are indeed a very tiny pass. If you're that good I suspect you'd be better off setting up the checkers and playing the next game.
