The mathematical technique is fair and unbalanced. David Montgomery's article at http://www.bkgm.com/articles/GOL/Feb00/var.htm explains the ideas nicely.

Maybe my nomenclatur was bad. When I say "gambling for $100 on the match" I am thinking that you put up $100 vs. opponent's $100. So if you lose match you have lost $100.
