What is truly needed, and I am sure will eventually happen, is a single, international Backgammon Federation and each of the countries can join and send delegates or have a vote on international affairs. It is important to have an international set of rules, international standards for tournament levels, ratings, and sanctioning of tournaments and clubs.
It is also a tremendous waste of energy for every country to have to reinvent the wheel in terms of coming up with programs to promote the game, education programs and materials for students, and all the many other functions that each committee is doing. Much of this can be done by a few of the most talented people in the world and their work can be replicated in every country through the international organization.
Let me give you just one example: the USBGF Education Committee under the fine leadership of Joe Russell, with a lot of help from others including Perry, Harvey, myself, and many committee members, is working very hard to come up with written material for college course programs, college and high school clubs, and general education programs. All of this can be helpful to the Federations throughout the world, and some of the work we are doing has probably already been done in places like Denmark, Japan, and other countries where people like Mochy have already put student-development programs in place.
An international federation will also give the game more visibility and make it more attractive to sponsors for tournaments, clubs, and education programs.
Chiva has done much to encourage the growth of Federations and was a strong influence on the formation of one in the U.S., and I would hope that he and others will take this to the next, logical level.
