Pure play vs. skill related adjustments

"Assuming 2 players are 55-45 in a 17 pointer when they both try to play their best and make no adjustments, how will the win rates look if the stronger player adjusts his game to his weaker opponent? "

Those players are very close in skill. Are they both really strong players? If they are both intermediates my guess is that the attempt to play to the skill difference will actually hurt the "stronger" player's win chance.
