It wouldn't be so surprising for there to be a gap that size

1) There is a difference between being a top level archer and being the best in the world. How many in the world considered a top level archer? As an analogy think of Tiger Woods in his prime vs. a typical top golfer good enough to play in PGA.

2) I am going to guess that conditions were near perfect the day the record was set. The %age in typical conditions would be lower.

3) Just natural variability is a factor here also.

Now maybe it is true that for a typical top level archer that they get 9 or 10 significantly more than 50%. You need to give a lot more evidence than just what the world record is to demonstrate that though. Do you know for example the average score at the last olympics?
