In Response To: Bad news from Belgium (Daniel Murphy)

the bad news from Belgium will disappoint many people. back in 1981 BG had the case of Oregon vs. Barr at the time it was the most important legal decision in BG history.

the four day trial which concluded in Portland,in February 1982 resulted in a big victory for BG.the judge ruled that Backgammon is not a game of chance but a game of skill.BG was therefore not subject to Oregon gambling restrictions and could operate like tennis or golf tournaments. this had a national impact since the Oregon regulations were identical to the state of New York. many states drafted there gambling laws after New Yorks.Henry Wattson director of the worlds largest amateur tournament . was the tournament expert witness.

Paul Magriel was the last defense witness. Magriel gave two hours of brillant, proficent testimony.the packed court room listened with fasination to his expert testimony. it was felt at the time the landmark decision, would allow all who promoted BG,an all who played to breathe a little easier. I know this information will have little or no effect on the Belgium tournaments in the future, but I thought some of the newer players may have not known this aspect of our Backgammon history!for those who do remember they were the good old days!!!!!!
