Wow, I never would have expected Luc's initial post on this issue to result in so many responses. I have just returned from the Hasselt tournament, or at least of the improvised tournament amongst those players still willing to attend and play for fun only. The attandence was about a fourth of what it was expected to have been without this issue. We have proven those absent wrong, by having a wonderfull time playing our favorite game. THANK YOU WALTER for all your efforts.
Many meaningfull and interesting issues have been stated in this thread, and I want to thank everyone contributing. In particular the Danish case gives some usefull insights. The Belgian law on "games with an element of probability" is very strict. Too strict in my opionon, although I sympathise with its goal (protecting youngsters and others from gambling addiction. Because of this stricter law the arguments inspired by the American cases are less relevant. The arguments that the Danes used to chance the law could be usefull. But a chance of the Belgian law is not a short-term option. Also, in Belgium backgammon isn't as well structured and organised as in Danmark, so it would be difficult to influence the lawmakers. We are looking at ways to continu the backgammon momentum in our Kingdom. Thanks to everyone on this forum supporting us.
