Good candidates for underdog doubles are situations in which you are trailing in the match score and the cube value is high (fuzzily speaking) compared to the remaining match length.
As a more general rule of thumb I would propose: Whenever the cube value is high, it's typically more important than usual to get your decisions right, and correct play deviates more strongly from $ play. Thus, you should take a few seconds to show off your match theory skills and calculate take points, give points and gammon prices.
