I assume you are aware for almost every main event format, you don't stop playing until you've accumulated 3 losses. So the notion of losing 'early' and having nothing to do isn't that common of an experience. Your most common result will involved 5 or 6 or more matches from the main event. The blitz and 2-point match events can certainly fill gaps in the play, and entering one of the jackpot events can give you a lot more action.

Even if you never play doubles or engage in chouette play at an ABT tournament, there certainly is 'enough to do'. Some jackpots may be restricted skill level, but the blitz and 2-point events and pick-up jackpots are always open to all.

I'm afraid you have a small case of contempt prior to investigation. Schedule an ABT weekend geographically easy for you, and I predict you will have fun.
