George, great comments!
A lot of casual players (including many old hands) are simply unaware of how much effort has gone into improving our understanding of our game in recent years. Winning play today requires application of deeper knowledge and better strategies that players of previous generations (including the greats of their day) could hardly have imagined.
Your comments put me in mind of many players I have known who were no better after 20 years than soon after they began. They studied less than others. They were too sure they knew it all and that bad results were due to bad luck. They were not challenged often enough to question what they thought they knew, because so many of their opponents played worse or no better than themselves. And when they played and lost to better players who made moves they would never have considered, they weren't able to admit that just maybe their opponents had something to teach them.
How many Wednesday chouettes did I sit in on, where the captain would make the same wrong move (and be corrected with the same good explanation) that he had made the previous Wednesday, and could be counted on to make next Wednesday, too!
