I have always thought you must be a masochist to be a backgammon player, but now I have seen what tournament directors go through, and it's not even close. The work and crap compared to the rewards is incredibly out of balance. As for people who live close and don't support the tournaments, it's a shame, but I understand it...I've missed some tournaments that were close to me--we all simply have other obligations and interests in our lives--so don't take it personally!
It's not just the cost of going to the tournament and entering, it's giving up an entire weekend away from family and other interests and obligations. Even those of us highly involved in backgammon can't make them all.
We simply need a larger base of players, or maybe fewer tournaments, or more sponsors, or more good reasons to attend that are being offered now. The USBGF is working on all of these things, and finally I think I see some light at the end of the tunnel. It just might take a few years before we've successfully attracted enough new blood. In the meantime, Clocks, fun side events, shorter matches, better venues, better rules, and a better point and rating system will all help.
