What shall us guide? A general game plan or the percentages of the rollouts? That is my main question. Or is the opening theory developing into a micro theory?

The very early opening phase is an example of a branch of backgammon expertise where you can, theoretically, excel without thinking about game plans; you just need to learn all the data that is floating around here. I'm not recommending it, of course. It is more fun and more instructive to learn to reason your way to the right decision.

That said, if game plan reasoning does not lead you to the percentages of the rollouts, I think it's more likely that there is an optimisation potential in your reasoning than that the bots are wrong.
