It's interesting that you are equating "variance" and "volatility". I always thought that what Walter Trice meant was the variance of the number of rolls that one side needs to bear off all checkers. At least that's the definition of variance I was assuming in my reply to Ray (not quite, actually, as what I was referring to was some compound of the variance of both sides). Anyway, with my definition I think variance and volatility are strongly correlated.
