In Response To: Publicly Responding To Pat Gibson's Personal Invitation Dec 3-5 (Bill Riles)

There are many things in which there are differences in personal preference, and unless there are compelling reasons why the common good is clearly served by a change, the status quo should take precedence.

I greatly prefer the dice tube over conventional dice rolling. To me, the tube is an efficient means of obtaining a random roll. To others, there is a pleasure associated with the physical act of rolling dice. I respect the opinions of others who prefer to roll dice from a cup and I do not believe that tubes or baffle boxes should be forced on people unless the director agrees in specific cases.

Some people take it further and would like to play live tournament matches on laptops. Yes, there are all sorts of good reasons for this. But in the end, it is my personal preference to play on a physical board. The aesthetics appeal to me and if I want to play backgammon on a computer, I will stay home. This is no different than people who prefer to roll dice rather than use a dice tube. I just prefer the physical board. I personally don't have a problem with permitting computer use if both players agree, but again, the default should be a physical board.

Some people do not like the feel of playing with a clock. They prefer their own set of dice and do not like the feeling of a clock intruding on their play. I respect that opinion as well. But this I believe is a case of the greater good and the potential harm of slow play taking priority over personal preference.
