In Response To: Congratulations! (Rich Munitz)

In the future, if we can join the stats database with the membership database, we would potentially be able to relate many players to location of residence, or an affiliated local backgammon club.

Good idea, which could be almost painless or quite tedious to implement, depending on how the data is organized now.

But do we really need that?

Depends on what you want to know and why. Obviously good guesses can be made without a lot more data -- a lot of Flint club members probably attend only the Michigan Summer Championships; the larger tournaments are probably the ones that attract more out of town players, and so on. When I said the data is there, I didn't just mean for answering Joe's question. Some months ago a question came up as to how many people attended 1 or 2, 3 or 4, and 5 or more ABT tournament per year. There was no response. I don't think anybody knows.

Anyway, it's a bigger subject than just attendance at this one tournament: Will a new tournament generate additional attendance or cannibalize existing tournaments? What's better, 3-day or 5-day? (the longer tournaments are the best attended, but does that mean there's room for another? How best to market backgammon to existing and potential local and out of town players? People keep talking about growing backgammon without (it seems) a very good idea of who the market is. But (a lot of) the data is there.

Joe's assessment that there were many locals in attendence seemed spot on.

Joe said locals made up a good portion of the attendance; Grant suggested that a lot of regular local players did not attend. Joe's ok with a 75 minute drive. Grant thnks 90 minutes one way was a turnoff for turnout. What's true? Probably both? But there's no need to guess, at least about who attended. With the right database and filters, you'd have answers in an instant.
