This may not be a complete answer, but in your variant White is doing much better racewise. When you're ahead you usually want to make sure you don't miss on low numbers (since that would sabotage an otherwise winning game), but when you're behind you usually want to make sure you don't miss on high numbers (low numbers are mostly hopeless anyway, but you don't want to miss a chance to capitalize on your high numbers).
