'I think in general a doubles team will play better than the strongest player alone.'

I am not sure this is true. Often the stronger player may allow his partner to make a decision that he is slightly opposed to in the spirit of comradeship. I have seen the weaker player cause the partnership to play much worse than the stronger player would have alone. If the partners are very close in skill, or they have complementary skills, or the weaker player is mainly there for support and protection, you may be right.
