I don't agree. If you don't want to play doubles with a partner, don't play doubles. Are there no other side events that permit you to play alone? The fact that playing with a partner hurts your game or helps your game or whatever is all the reason we need to know that the presence of a partner matters in this event. The purpose of the doubles event is not to produce the best play possible. The purpose is to have two players facing two players. Just like you can't enter speedgammon and then agree to play without the clock because you both play plenty fast anyway. The partner should be required equipment for this event.
