Experience from some consulting chouettes suggests to me that a pair may play worse than *either* individual singly - the problem being that when they disagree on choosing between strongly thematic moves, they may pick a move that attempts to compromise between the two but actually gets the worst of both worlds. Of course if the pair is indisciplined or a casual pickup, both may also be liable to interrupt each other's concentration at critical moments.
