Coincidental that your pick and Michael Petch's pick are in the same grouping of four in the round of 32 -- would meet in round of 16.

Part of the allure of backgammon for all of us is, I think, the unpredictability -- the influence of skill, luck, the draw, the pressure, the personalities, etc.

There are many different types of players and, within each type, various levels of performance and consistency.

Some players are not affected by pressure. Some players just know better how to win. Some players are better recognizing the flow of the game. Some players are great with the psychological and emotional aspects of the game. Better backgammon skills are important, but not exclusively so; very good skills, contrasted to excellent skills, when coupled with experience, flow and pattern recognition, calmness, opponent evaluation skills, etc. can be very difficult for even the best technical player to beat.
