"For myself, the lesson would be to conserve time for pip-counts and other mechanical stuff, or to make sure that I would be able to these very quickly, and maybe both. Being able to do these thing quickly seems a major advantage in clocked play. "

If I am very low on time, I keep a running count from the first roll of the game. Agree that it may possbily distract from other thinking but is worth it I think.
