I don't totally agree.
Obviously, one never knows how long a match will last; however, I think it quite important to pace oneself and prepare for near worst case scenarios.
As previously stated, yesterday Stepan had 15 minutes left and MCG 18 minutes left with the score 6-5 in a 21 point match -- having started with 42 minutes. In my opinion, each should have recognized, early on, the potential situations they were headed toward.
The last several games were, effectively, played as speedgammon and the negative effects on their play was obvious to the spectators. Coupling critical time pressure with the pressure of the event can overwhelm almost any player.
Neil correctly stated late in the match that one should sacrifice 0.1-0.2 PR early in the match rather than sacrifice 1.0-2.0 in truly critical games at the end of the match.
We did not get continuous feedback on the clock -- indeed, they were playing so fast down the stretch that Stick was probably lucky to keep up with the entries and not worry about anything else. But it was reported at 20-17PC that Stepan had 0:57 left and MCG had 2:40 left. Stick said Stepan had "no" time left at the end -- I assume that means less than 10 seconds, perhaps less than 5 seconds.
Does the fact that he had "no" time left and had to play 3-4 games as speedgammon at the end of the match -- with a nice lead -- indicate 'efficient' use of his time? It got to DMP and MCG had a shot at rolling a 2 to win.
