I'm late to posting and having read everyone else's posts already nobody has mentioned the first thing I looked at. The question generally isn't about how many checkers your opponent has off, but does taking a checker off possibly save you a roll? Or in other words, does taking a man off get you to an odd number of checkers off or to an even number?
If it gets you to an odd numbers of checkers off it's more likely to be correct because it may be saving you a roll. If it gets you to an even number of checkers off you haven't gained much of anything. In the position posted taking a checker off doesn't save you a roll since it leaves you 4 off so you should clear from the rear, 5/3 5/2.
