Aye, after 5/3 5/2, if Opp is still on the bar, all those rolls should be played taking two checkers off for a total of five off. So they don't cost a roll, but do leave some shots.
On the other hand, after 3/off 3/1, if Opp is still on the bar, 32 and 31 take a fifth checker off but also leave a blot, and 3-3 takes none off (for a total of four off) instead of three off (for a total of six), so it loses a roll.
Justin posted some rollouts varying the number of checkers Opponent has off. Below are some rollouts in which Opp has 10 checkers off, with Player's checkers off varying:
