The top two plays here are closer than I would have thought...I guess I didn't expect so many gammon losses.

Stick asked:

do you really still think it's right to hit if you're John O'Hagan playing your average donkey?

I don't see why not. Is your assumption that it's bad to give a weaker player a chance to take an early lead in the match? This early in the match, I don't see why that's true. To gain a small early lead in the match, it's worth it to risk the opponent's getting a small early lead, and I don't see why the tradeoff should be significantly different if the opponent is significantly weaker.
