Travelling to NY Metro

I've decided to combine a trip and attend the NY Metro tournament, and then fly out to the west coast. The trip to the event will be from Washington DC Metro Station via Amtrak, and then I'll fly out of JFK.

Here are some general questions:

* I've almost never traveled on Amtrak before, and certainly not on the east coast. Is this a reasonable trip to make? Is there another good way to try to make the trip?

* How difficult will it be for me to get from the tournament site to JFK via public transportation? Can I do it in an hour or so?
