Who is the better BG player: the one who has the lowest error rate, or the one who somehow maximizes the difference between his errror rate and that of his opponent?

I believe that if you have the ability to adapt to the opponents skill level, and/or take advantage of known weaknesses/tendencies of an opponent I believe you can gain perform better.
One problem is that standard METs of course assume equal ability. I think the best writings on asymmetric METs is Jake Jacobs and Walter Trice's book "Can a Fish Taste Twice as Good? Doubling in an Unequal Backgammon Match".
I also believe that an underdog (weaker player) can perform above the bots apparent measure of ER when playing a significantly better player (especially against those stronger players who do not adapt). Some people I know fall into this category - they play more aggressive cubes against stronger opps, they pump up the cube to try and reduce the number of checker plays, especially if checker play is their weakness.
