Who is the better BG player: the one who has the lowest error rate, or the one who somehow maximizes the difference between his errror rate and that of his opponent?

So adjusting play due to an uncertain skill difference seems to be a skill itself.

There is optimal play against any player. Making the bot play can be just as wrong as overadjusting. Either approach can lose. There is no question that players who are better able to judge their opponents and consistently give them difficult decisions will win more, no matter what the bot thinks of those choices.

Wise words. There is a world of difference between stating that the optimal play depends on the information known about the opponent (obviously true), and stating that one is actually able to gain equity by adjusting without overadjusting.
