There is no question that Gregg (and Neil) is a gentleman, and what he did was very nice. My problem with this is that now we have created a gray area relative to all rule enforcement. Where do we draw the line between being a gentleman and a jerk?

If our opponent fondles the doubling cube and then realized he had the wrong score, should we forgive him? If he does not agree to play legal moves and then makes an error like the one described, I certainly would not cut him any slack, and I would expect the same....and if I made a mistake and he offered to let me correct it, I would be a "gentleman" and tell him that in all honesty and good faith, I could not accept his kind offer because if the situation were reversed, I would not let him take the move over. (We should all be playing legal moves, in my opinion, to eliminate this and many other problems with playing the other way.)

If my opponent fast-rolls, am I supposed to "warn him"??? Is there anyone out there who believes that an open player was never warned before and doesn't know the rules????

If his clock runs out, but he had a headache and stopped a couple of times for aspirin, am I supposed to be a gentleman and not take the win?

I am a strong believer in good sportsmanship, but to me that means that I will accept, with grace, any penalties that I deserve as a result of my own mistakes, and I accept the same from my opponents.

(Again, I believe this should apply to the Open and Intermediate Divisions, but in the Novice it should be clearly stated that "first time" infractions should be given a warning and explanation and we should cut some slack to beginners.)
