Phil,

I agree with your point. There is also a secondary and personal gain from self enforcement of the rules. While I have made many mistakes including trying to make a point using one of my checkers and one of my oppys checkers (Howard made me replay the move as it wasn't a legal ending position) one of my most brilliant and memorable illegal plays was to use my opening 65 to run my oppy's checker from the 24 point to the midpoint. He looked at me like I had lost my mind (not sure I ever had one to start with). When he pointed out my mistake I refused to take it back. I figured it this way...First of all he deserved the advantage just for having to put up with my idiocracy. And Second... If I enforce the penalty on myself I will dang well make sure and pay better attention to what I'm doing over the board in the future because of the penalty. No pain.. no gain!
