Congratulations to Norm Wiggins for winning the seniors' event on the day he turned 80! Norm is a great player, great author and great person.
As a serious math student in my youth, one of my many accomplishments (my great humility usually prevents me from mentioning them) was formulating and proving the now-famous Birthday Theorem. It states that a person has his (X + 1)th birthday on the day he turns X years old.
The proof by mathematical induction is trivial.
By definition, a person is born on his birthday, which is his first birthday; everyone is zero when born on his first birthday. One year later, this person turns one year old on his second birthday. Another year later, he turns two years old on his third birthday. See the pattern? Get the picture?
John Lennon was born in 1940. I read many times that if he had still been living, he would have had his 70th birthday this year, in 2010. A common misconception, but not true. He would have had his 71st birthday this year.
It is amazing to me how many people share this misconception. The truth seems so very simple and obvious to me.
Congratulations again to Norm Wiggins for winning the seniors' event!
Happy 81st birthday to Norm, who turned 80!
